Six Year Olds Have Big Hearts Don’t They?
Aren’t six year olds so cute? Most of the time anyway! I know, forget the snotty nose, the food in their hair or the lost shoe. Most of the time six year olds are delightful.
Why are six year olds delightful you may ask? Because they look at life as though it’s simple. And they have that view about everything. Nothing is complex when you’re six.
I was asked to speak to a class of six year olds last week. My daughter’s class is talking about money and business so Mrs Edwards invited me along to talk about my views on money. In particular she asked me to help them develop some ideas on how they could raise finances for a Tear Fund project in Africa.
To keep things simple here are the key points:
A) There are three things you can do with money. Make sure you do all of them, and do them in proportion to what you think will make you successful. The three things are giving, saving and spending. If your split is 1%, 1%, 98% and you think that will make you successful, I encourage you to think again!
B) When you have a project or a goal be very clear about why you are doing it. Having a clear reason will be a powerful driving force to help you progress.
C) Identify partners that will help you to achieve your goal. Show them how committed you are to the project and ask for their support. It’s their support that will help sustain your energy and may even give you some momentum towards achievement.
So this group of six year olds had set a class goal to raise enough money for 40 kids to receive immunisation shots. I don’t know how much they needed in total but I can assure you the whole class had lots of ideas on how to raise the funds required.
To be honest, my input isn’t the key factor in their success. What will count is the support they receive when they get home. It’s the input from the people at home and the encouragement from family that will help those kids achieve their targets.
What can you do to help the kids around you?
