Selling Poo for Profit

This sounds like a story you might turn your nose up at, but it’s all true.  I promise!

I received an email from a guy who attended one of the Kids and Money webinars.  He was keen to share a story about what his kids are doing to be enterprising and earn some money.  I gotta admit, I admire these kids for the hard work and effort they’re putting in.

Here’s Steve’s story:

How to help your kids to make money

My kids (with my help) are selling lawn and garden fertiliser to neighbours and relatives etc for the kids to earn pocket money.

We have bought the fertiliser in bulk through a person who owns a fertiliser company, bagged it and now selling it.  The kids are into it and it is teaching them all sorts of good stuff re business, finance etc.

It’s high quality commercial fertiliser and we can sell 5 to 10 4.5kg bags on a Sat morning in an hour or two .  Bags cost $10.50 for the kids to buy and sell them for $15.00.   This means the kids make $4.50 profit on every bag they sell.   However, we get a few people just giving us $20 and say keep the change as they like the attitude of kids doing something enterprising.  (Note from Phil:  People love to support kids who are working for reward!)

Ain’t that a great story?

This is a practical example of the ideas Amanda and I talk about in our new book, Kids and Money.  You can watch videos explaining why we wrote this book and highlights from each chapter here:  http://kidsandmoneybook.com/videos/.

In the meantime, here’s my challenge for all you parents, grandparents, aunties uncles and family friends…

What are you doing to help the next generation be equipped and empowered to make wise choices with their money?

Feel free to let me know!
